Daphne
In 2006, when CAWG (Cretan Animal Welfare Group)
received the first call about Daphne she was tied, in
a field, with no food or water. Her owner had been
taken by the police and only caring neighbours had
looked after her. Gayner (the owner of the Haven)
moved Daphne into shade and provided food and
water. She could not take Daphne with her, because
she was told that when the owner returned he
wanted her for photographs and donkey rides with tourists.

As the owner returned the next day, Gayner thought Daphne’s problems were at an end, but after 10 days her owner called Gayner to collect her. He has been refused a license to work with Daphne, so she was of no use to him!!!!

England has just won their World Cup match and all the fans were celebrating as Gayner anmd her husband, Michael went to collect Daphne from the other side of Malia. She was now loose and very nervous and it took some time to catch her. When Gayner caught her she was horrified to see that her head collar was now cutting into her head behind her ears and rubbing her cheeks so badly that flies had laid their eggs and she was crawling with maggots and a smell of putrid flesh!!

She fixed a rope as a neck collar and removed the offending head collar, giving some relief. Then Gayner and Anneke, a Dutch volunteer walked her slowly to the Haven, across a busy main road and past many drunken fans but Daphne was superb and very well behaved.

Under the street light they cleaned her wounds of the maggots and settled her into her new accommodation, where Daphne seemed to be very happy and content.
Later they learned the reason for Daphne’s nervousness. After the World Cup Match, drunken English fans saw Daphne in the field behind their hotel and decided to have some fun. They took her into the hotel grounds and tried to push her into the swimming pool, ...... where she would have surely drowned.
Fortunately, Daphne kicked 2 of them into the pool and escaped. Bravo Daphne! Let us hope that she kicked them where it really hurt……

After only 5 days at the Haven Daphne was recovering well.

But she was overweight and needed to be put on a diet. Daphne did not like this, as food was very important to her. The neighbours around the Haven could hear her complaints.
One day Iwent to take her for a walk. Just at that moment she was eating and Gayner said you have come at the wrong time because of Daphne and her love of food!!!
I called her name anyway and immediately she ran to me.
Unbelievable, Gayner said to me, this is true love!!! ”.
